Build an Aluminum Specification

A practical checklist for turning an aluminum requirement into a comparable supplier brief.

Start with the delivered scope

Start with the delivered item, not only the material name. A useful brief lets every recipient see the same requirement and identify any exceptions before quoting.

Build the requirement

Material identity
Record product form, exact alloy designation, designation system and temper. If you do not know the correct material, say that selection is open and request a written proposal for review.
Geometry and revision
State units, dimensions and the controlling drawing revision. Mark critical mating features and describe why they matter; do not rely on a photograph for dimensional acceptance.
Processing and finish
List every included operation and the expected delivered condition. Name any masking, cleaning, protective film or assembly requirement.
Quantity and timing
Give quantity and unit, sample quantity, intended batch split, destination and requested timing. Distinguish a first trial from an expected repeat order.
Acceptance and records
List the product specification and edition, required sample checks and batch documents. Require deviations or substitutions to be identified explicitly.
Response format
Ask the supplier to state what is included, what is excluded, any assumptions and the entity that would issue the quotation. Keep answers in the same field order.

Questions for the supplier

  1. Question 1Does the brief describe a raw material, semi-finished item or finished component?
  2. Question 2Which requirements are fixed, and which need a producer proposal?
  3. Question 3Can you identify the drawing and sample that would control acceptance?

Avoid these comparison gaps

  • Do not silently treat alloy codes from different designation systems as equivalent.
  • Avoid requesting a generic quality certificate without naming what evidence is required.
  • A complete brief organizes the discussion; it is not a substitute for engineering review.
