Prepare a Surface Finish Brief
Give a finish provider a usable description of appearance, masking and inspection requirements.
Start with the delivered scope
Specify how the part will be used and how its finish will be accepted. An approved visual reference helps, but it should sit beside a written process and inspection scope.
AlumHome buyer checklist · Updated 2 October 2026. Use this to prepare questions; confirm the actual engineering and acceptance requirements with the responsible parties.
Build the requirement
- Application
- Describe visible faces, use environment and any downstream joining, assembly or cleaning steps. Let the provider flag conflicts before production.
- Proposed finish
- State treatment type, color reference, gloss and texture where applicable. Ask for a proposed specification if the finish has not been selected.
- Sample control
- Record the approved sample identity and the drawing revision it accompanies. Say which faces must match and how differences will be reviewed.
- Masking and interfaces
- Mark untreated surfaces, contact areas and critical fits. Request confirmation that the proposed process is compatible with those constraints.
- Tests and evidence
- Name the applicable standard and edition where required and agree the report scope. A quality label or process record is not automatically the complete order acceptance evidence.
- Handling
- Specify protection, packing and identification after treatment so the approved finish can be preserved through delivery and assembly.
Questions for the supplier
- Question 1Who will perform the treatment and approve the finished samples?
- Question 2What must be measured, and what will be assessed visually?
- Question 3Which claims apply to your actual product and processing site?
Avoid these comparison gaps
- Do not use a marketing color name as the only acceptance reference.
- Architectural coating requirements should not be applied to unrelated finishes without checking scope.
- Avoid promising a universal service life from a finish name alone.
