Aluminum Machining, Fabrication & Finished-Part Delivery
Connect starting material, controlled drawings, processing sites and final acceptance to one delivered component.
Start with what arrives at your door
A raw extrusion, cut blank, machined part and assembled component are different deliverables. Choose the required supplied state before comparing providers. A finished-part order should connect material, drawing, operations, finish, inspection and packing to the same part reference. Ask the supplier to identify its contracting entity, responsible operation sites and exclusions in writing. A material producer can be a research starting point without being confirmed for the complete finished scope.

Choose the delivered scope
- Extruded length
- Define alloy, temper, section reference, length and the relevant material and geometry requirements. Ask what remains for another processing supplier.
- Cut blank
- Add cut length, end geometry, edge condition and identification. Clarify whether holes, finish and dimensional reports are excluded.
- Machined component
- Add the controlled finished-part drawing, holes, threads, pockets, mating faces, finish and final inspection stage.
- Assembly or kit
- List each member, accessory and interface. Define assembly responsibility, included hardware and the checks required for the delivered package.
Follow the production route
AEC describes cutting and further fabrication as steps that can turn an extrusion into a functional component. Hydro notes that machining may precede or follow surface treatment depending on the product requirements. The route below is a procurement planning sequence, not a fixed manufacturing instruction.
- 1. Material and forming
- Identify the proposed blank: extrusion, plate, bar, casting or forging. Retain the specified material condition and any proposed change for review.
- 2. Cutting and machining
- Identify cutting, drilling, tapping, milling, turning or other drawing-required features. Ask the supplier to raise feasibility and interpretation questions.
- 3. Finishing and cleaning
- Agree treatment, masking, edge condition, cleanliness and handling between operations. Record what the finished component must demonstrate.
- 4. Inspection and sample review
- Link the agreed reports and review findings to the part, revision and sample. Keep deviations and evidence gaps visible.
- 5. Packing and dispatch
- Specify protected faces, identification, packing and accompanying records. Confirm the actual dispatch origin and delivery scope.
Assign each operation and site
Ask who supplies the stock, which site machines it, who performs treatment and who owns final inspection. External processing is a scope question to clarify rather than an automatic reason to reject an offer. The contracting supplier should explain how the operations and records remain connected. Record who handles damage, nonconforming work, replacement and communication between sites. A CNC service headline does not establish these responsibilities for the actual order.
Give suppliers a controlled requirement
- Drawing package
- Part number, drawing and CAD revisions, units, datums, interfaces and controlling document. Resolve conflicts through the requirement owner.
- Material requirement
- Form, alloy, temper, specification and document needs. State whether stock is buyer supplied or purchased by the processor.
- Operation and finish scope
- Required operations, masking, cleanliness and supplied condition. Ask for explicit inclusions, exclusions and externally performed steps.
- Inspection and evidence
- Features needing reports, sample identity, applicable inspection stage and document references. A general accuracy claim is insufficient.
- Commercial comparison
- Trial and repeat quantities, quotation units, setup, fixtures, finishing, inspection, packing and delivery terms. Record any unquoted item.
Keep sample acceptance and production release distinct
Before the trial, define what the sample represents and the required review evidence. An unfinished section may support discussion of the extrusion but does not establish acceptance of a coated machined part. Identify the responsible reviewer and document any deviations. Retain the separate production-release decision with its drawing revision, accepted scope and conditions. Checklist completion counts show record status; they do not validate evidence or authorize manufacture.
Resolve a quotation gap before comparing price
Consider a mounting component requiring cut ends, threaded holes, anodizing, masked contact areas and final dimensional inspection. One supplier quotes stock and machining; another includes the treated, inspected and packed part. Record missing operations and responsibilities, request a clarified offer and compare the same delivered unit. Keep one-time fixtures and trial costs separate from recurring production costs. Neither the cheapest unit figure nor an attractive sample photo resolves a missing scope item.
Research CNC-service suppliers
WayKen, RapidDirect and 3ERP have existing company-source research records describing machining services. These records are leads for scope questions, not independently audited suppliers or confirmation of a particular feature tolerance, certificate, capacity or schedule. Review each record and ask for a written response to the actual material, drawing, operations and evidence needs.
Prepare and follow the inquiry
Use the guide checklist to prepare a local working record, then add the controlled files manually through the agreed contact route. The inquiry center prepares a draft addressed to Tony and does not automatically distribute it to directory companies. Opening an email link is not a confirmed acknowledgement. Retain actual replies, written scope clarifications and next actions with each supplier reference.
Buyer questions
Does an extrusion supplier automatically supply finished parts?
Confirm the actual operation scope, responsible sites, inspection and delivered condition in the order-specific offer.
Are machining and finish quotations directly comparable?
Compare the complete delivered scope and units. Record unquoted material, finish, inspection or packing before ranking prices.
Can a generic tolerance claim replace drawing review?
No. Agree the feature-specific requirements and inspection evidence for the controlled component.
Does this platform release samples or production?
No. Its tools prepare local notes; the responsible authorized people issue the separate project decision.
