Define what the supplier actually delivers
Process and drawing boundary
Ask the supplier to identify the proposed casting process. Supply the finished-part drawing, revision, alloy requirement and critical interfaces. Record proposed parting lines and other manufacturing decisions for design-owner approval.
Tooling and samples
Separate tooling from recurring part cost. Agree ownership, maintenance, change control, sample quantity and who approves the first article before series production.
Finished-part acceptance
Identify machined faces, threaded features, finish and inspection scope. If internal soundness, leak-tightness or another functional characteristic matters, agree the applicable assessment and acceptance criteria.
Questions that change the quotation
- Do not infer process equivalence
- A process change needs an explicit review of the finished requirements, tooling and acceptance plan; a similar shape alone is insufficient.
- Complete cost scope
- Ask whether trimming, deburring, heat treatment where specified, machining, coating and inspection are included or subcontracted.
- Traceability and changes
- Request lot identification and written control of changes to material, tooling and production route. A generic quality statement does not replace this order-specific agreement.
